Humphrey George West Household (1906–1996) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. After his period of training on the LNER he changed career and became a schoolmaster in Blandford, Dorset. With his interest in transport history, his first major work was The Thames and Severn Canal, first published in 1969. He went on to write several railway titles for Alan Sutton Publishing.
